This post is part of the #reverb10 annual event. I have to give a shout out to Shenee Howard who brought this awesome project to my attention.
What is #reverb10?
“Reverb 10 is an annual event and online initiative to reflect on your year and manifest what’s next. Use the end of your year as an opportunity
to reflect on what’s happened, and to send out reverberations for the year ahead. With Reverb 10 – and the 31 prompts our authors have created for you – you’ll have support on your journey.“
Writing prompt:
Where have you discovered community, online or otherwise, in 2010? What community would you like to join, create or more deeply connect with in 2011?
What the hell is community?
Community for me, simply means, a group of people united around a common goal, idea or interest. Obviously the world has changed and the way we connect has evolved. For that reason I wont get into all the Web 2.0 (or is it 3.0, who fucking knows) buzz words.
Back in the day when we were rockin two foot tall cell phones and the IPhone wasn’t even a twinkle in Steve Jobs eyes. Our community or friends were determined by geography, for the most part.
The concept of community hasn’t changed
Community really hasn’t changed as a concept, the tools we use and the options we have, has evolved. We no longer are restricted to our neighborhood or who we sit next to in English class.
We don’t have to be relegated to one community, like high school cliques.
I’m not only about business or travel or blogging or writing. Some of these may overlap, but we don’t have to choose one. This is why community is such a bad ass concept and why I dig them.
Undiscovered community, for me anyways
Where have you discovered community, online or otherwise, in 2010?
My itchy feet started to get the best of me earlier this year and I was getting restless with my life. I knew there had to be a change. I didn’t know exactly what, but I knew a shift was coming.
As I started this path of discovery, I came across all these people who were bucking the system and living life on their terms. This fired me up.
Then I read about the idea of backpacking and around the World trips. This really intrigued me, as I read about these experiences, the idea pulled me in deeper. They weren’t just talking about they were doing it and that freakin inspired me.
I love to travel and explore but I’ve never really experienced the World beyond sheltered touristy week-long jaunts.
Kicking it up a notch
Then I thought, “I’m going to kick this up a notch”. The idea of taking six months or a year off to travel seemed cool, but I wanted something more. Going back to the status quo template lifestyle after my journey was not appealing to me.
So I decided to say fuck it, I’m really gonna shake things up. I’m going to sell all my crap, sell my house and quit my job.
I like to take drastic measures, you have to do that sometimes. My personal goal is to be location independent and those chains were preventing that.
I did decide to make changes, but in reality I wasn’t truly committed, even though I thought I was. You can always tell if someone is committed by what actions they take. I was doing more talking then walking… not anymore.
I recently committed to myself and the community that I was going to fucking do it damn it.
If it wasn’t for the travel blogging community I wouldn’t have committed to embarking on my RTW trip. For that, I owe the community much gratitude.
Going forward, 2011 and beyond
What community would you like to join, create or more deeply connect with in 2011?
I will continue to connect deeper in the travel community. I will give back by supporting others in any way I can. I will give others a gentle nudge or a swift kick in the ass if they need it.
I will pursue my location independence goal. Starting by joining that community and connecting with the bad asses there. This will actually be one of the themes of my blog when I relaunch this blog on January 3rd.
I will get more involved and connect deeper in the entrepreneur community. This will be in direct relation to my location independence goal. I love building businesses and the whole community around it. That community really lights a fire under my ass.
Quick side note: The whole reason I’m doing this post is a result of community. The reveb10 project in itself is a community.
Your turn, share your thoughts won’t cha

Hi Todd,
I dig what you got going on there. You're definitely building a great community there.
Right on... It's all about giving first.
